The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) moved 59,112 containers by rail in September, a 12.5% increase over September 2024, despite an overall cargo volume decrease in the month.
The September increase continues a monthly upward trend in cargo moved by rail, PANYNJ officials said in a press release. Total containers moved by rail in the first nine months of 2025 climbed 12.3% over the same period in 2024.
Total volume of cargo handled by the port's terminals in September was 740,254 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a 5% decrease from the same month in 2024. However, the port's total volume handled over the first nine months of 2025 was 6,787,649 TEUs, a 2.6% increase.
The decrease in September traffic can be partially attributed to U.S. retailers importing holiday-related cargo earlier in 2025 in anticipation of tariff policy changes, PANYNJ officials said.
September imports totaled 363,790 TEUs, a 4.6% decrease from last year. Exports rose 1.8% in September, totaling 120,796 TEUs.
The PANYNJ has connections to CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway via its near- and on-dock ExpressRail facilities.
