Yesterday, Pacer International Inc. announced it entered into a new multi-year agreement with CSX Transportation that enables the Class to continue serving as Pacer’s primary rail carrier in the eastern U.S.

Together with existing agreements between the parties, which will remain in place, the new pact provides service terms for intermodal shipments in Pacer’s private container fleet of 18,000-plus units.

“We recognize that CSX’s intermodal business serves more major eastern U.S. markets than any other rail carrier, and we will be working closely with CSX to capitalize on favorable trends in the intermodal industry,” said Pacer Chief Executive Officer Dan Avramovich in a prepared statement. “We expect this new agreement will provide the foundation to increase our volumes on CSX, particularly east-to-east shipments, expand our services to existing customers and win new customers.”

CSXT has partnered with Pacer since 1999.

“The completion of this new agreement is further evidence of Pacer’s successful transition to a direct-to-customer intermodal model,” said CSXT Vice President of Intermodal Bill Clement.

Meanwhile, Schneider National Inc. announced it signed a new multi-year agreement with BNSF Railway Co. through which the Class I will continue to serve as one of Schneider’s primary rail providers.

“Schneider’s asset-based intermodal service expertise, combined with BNSF’s commitment to a technologically advanced and efficient rail system, provides customers a proven solution during a time of tight truckload capacity,” said Bill Matheson, Schneider National’s president of intermodal services, in a prepared statement.

BNSF became Schneider National’s primary western rail provider in 2008. The pact provides Schneider National customers continued access to two service levels and daily service in all major lanes.

"More and more shippers are realizing the benefits of converting their over-the-road freight to intermodal,” said Steve Branscum, BNSF’s group vice president-consumer products marketing. “As they do so, our two companies are poised to provide these shippers with exceptional intermodal service throughout the U.S.”

Schneider National also moves intermodal loads in the East with CSXT, as well as traffic crossing the Canadian and Mexican borders with CN and Kansas City Southern Railway.
