Pacer International has turned to one of its own to succeed founder and top executive Don Orris. Today, the company announced it appointed Vice Chairman Michael Uremovich chairman and chief executive officer.

Last month, Orris said he would retire within 12 months after Pacer’s board named his successor. He plans to continue serving as a board member and assisting the leadership transition until March 31, 2007.

Prior to joining Pacer in October 2003, Uremovich was a partner in consulting firm Manalytics International. He previously served in various senior marketing positions for Southern Pacific Railroad, APL Ltd. and Lee Way Motor Freight. Similar to Orris, Uremovich played a role in the commercial development of double-stack rail transportation and intermodal logistics services.

“[Uremovich] brings a wide range of transportation and logistics knowledge and experience to virtually all of our businesses, including … intermodal marketing, highway services, logistics management and international services,” said Orris — who founded Pacer in 1997 and has spent 44 years in the freight transportation industry — in a prepared statement.

Pacer provides stacktrain, cartage, intermodal marketing, trucking and truck brokerage, warehousing, distribution, international freight forwarding and supply-chain management services.
