A majority of the workers at Pacific Rail Services’ Memphis, Tenn., intermodal yard recently voted in favor of joining the Teamsters Rail Conference. The company employs 140 workers at the yard to unload containers from rail cars and transfer the equipment to trucks.

The organizing victory is the first for the Teamsters’ conference, which represents more than 70,000 U.S. freight and commuter railroad workers. Formed in 2004, the rail conference includes the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, and Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division.

In addition to operating intermodal yards, Pacific Rail Services constructs railroad flat-car bridges and provides bridge inspection services, maintenance-of-way equipment and hy-rail gear.
