The Port of New Orleans (NOLA) has been awarded a $1 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the port's Louisiana International Terminal's (LIT) sustainability management plan.
The terminal will be built in Violet, Louisiana, 17 miles downriver from the Crescent City Connection bridge, eliminating air draft restrictions for vessels that call Port NOLA. The EPA grant delivers funds to three community-based organizations to help provide workforce development and educational opportunities for the Violet and St. Bernard Parish communities that will relate to LIT’s future careers and sustainability outcomes, Port NOLA officials said in a press release.
The sustainability management plan will follow the Envision framework developed by the Institute of Sustainable Infrastructure. Envision uses proven best practices that include environmental, social and economic considerations, they said.
When completed, the LIT will be able to handle the largest container vessels that traverse the Panama Canal locks, which will dramatically increasing Louisiana’s import and export capacity and allow both container-on-barge and intermodal services to expand, port officials said.
Port NOLA is served by six Class Is connected by the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad.
