The Hancock County Port and Harbor Commission of Mississippi (HCPHC) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Nov. 15 for the start of a $6 million expansion of the Port Bienville Railroad storage yard.
Funded by the U.S. Maritime Administration’s Port Infrastructure Development Program, the project is designed to expand the existing rail line with a side track and storage yard track ladders. When completed, the yard's capacity will increase by 150 car spaces to 600, commission officials said in a press release.
The enhanced rail capacity will enable the commission to more effectively cater to current tenants and create prospects for future developments in regional transient storage, HCPHC officials said.
The tracks and siding will involve 12,173 square feet of additional storage track and include nine turnouts, 6,087 steel ties, and 9,739 tons of ballast. The additional car spaces are expected to increase the HCPHC’s storage capacity by 25%.
The project also will allow Port Bienville plants to increase production and provide the HCPHC the ability to market the increased capacity to railroads, including the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad and CSX.
