The Port of Los Angeles (POLA) announced a record January with 865,595 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) handled, up 3.6% year over year.

It was the busiest January in the port’s 115-year history, POLA officials said in a press release. Empty container volume hit 338,202 TEUs, up 21.4. Heavy demand from Asia is driving business, port officials said.

However, loaded exports in January totaled 100,185 TEUs, down 16%, and loaded imports totaled 427,208 TEUs, down 2.4%. Exports have declined in 35 out of the past 39 months from January in Los Angeles, POLA officials said.
