Port of Los Angeles recognized for berths project

The American Public Works Association's (APWA) Southern California Chapter has honored the Port of Los Angeles with the creativity and innovation award for its Berths 142-147 TraPac Intermodal Container Facility project.

The $71 million project included construction of a new semi-automated on-dock rail yard at the TraPac terminal. The yard features eight working tracks, concrete foundations to support up to four new rail-mounted gantry cranes, a train-in-motion warning system, automatic rail switches and monitoring equipment.

A $27 million grant from the California Transportation Commission covered some of the project's costs, port officials said in a press release.

The APWA Southern California Chapter's "Building Excellence Shaping Tomorrow" (BEST) awards recognize public agencies for outstanding public works projects or programs that demonstrate "resourcefulness and imagination," port officials said.

The Port of Los Angeles is served by BNSF Railway Co., Union Pacific Railroad and Pacific Harbor Line Inc., which provides switching services.
