The Port of Oakland in California will add three 300-foot-tall gantry cranes to accommodate the latest generation megaships capable of carrying nearly 23,000 cargo containers stacked 12-high above deck.
The cranes will replace three of the 10 cranes at Oakland International Container Terminal on Oakland Estuary, operated by SSA. This terminal handles 60 percent of the port's total cargo volume.
A $30 million order for the cranes is expected to ship from China in 18 months from Shanghai-based ZPMC. The cranes will arrive partially assembled to assure clearance under the San Francisco-Oakland Bay bridge.
Once fully assembled, the crane will have a lift height of 174 feet above the dock and will reach 225 feet across a ship's deck.
"Big ships are the future," said SSA Containers President Ed DeNike in a press release. "They're coming to Oakland and we're going to be ready for them."
BNSF Railway Co. and Union Pacific Railroad serve the port.
