The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) announced that the Port of Savannah handled a total 479,000 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in January 2022, a record for the port.
That’s a 4% increase when compared with January 2021 volume, when the port already recorded a 22% increase. January was the eighteenth consecutive month that the port set a new monthly volume-handled record, GPA officials said in a press release.
Over the past year and a half, Savannah has grown container volume by 1.2 million TEUs, and by more than 930,000 TEUs logged in from 2021 alone. GPA also hired 145 new employees last year.
“The steps we have taken to add capacity have broken the logjam in global logistics for our customers and created jobs throughout the supply chain,” said GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch.
GPA has launched its fifth pop-up container yard in order to better handle growth. The other four pop-up yards are in Savannah, Atlanta, Statesboro and at the Appalachian Regional Port in Crandall, Georgia. Altogether, they add 410,000 TEUs worth of additional container space, which helps reduce storage time at Savannah’s Garden City Terminal.
“The success of our inland pop-up yards has provided an excellent relief valve and reduced the number of containers at the Port of Savannah,” said GPA Board Chairman Joel Wooten.
The port is now also loading import containers for delivery to the 330-acre CCX Yard in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. CSX owns and operates the yard, which offers annual capacity of 40,000 TEUs. In its initial arrangement with the railroad, GPA will use up to 400 container slots, or about 800 TEUs.
