The Port of Savannah in Georgia achieved its busiest September ever, handling 472,000 20-foot equivalent container units, up 14.5% year over year. Total cargo reached 3.3 million tons, up 8%.
The Garden City Terminal has garnered steady improvement in the speed of cargo moving from dock to destination, Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) officials said in a news release. The port's truck gates are averaging 70,000 moves per week — counting both import and export cargo — while intermodal containers take less than two days to move from a vessel offload to departing rail.
Partnering with importers to clear long-dwelling containers, the port has achieved a 55% reduction in the number of import containers sitting at the terminal for longer than four weeks, GPA officials said. The average dwell time for import containers is now 11 days, while exports average seven days.
The GPA has also adjusted its container receiving window to provide greater predictability for export customers.
CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway serve the port.
