The Port of South Louisiana has announced that the construction of a six-track rail yard in St. Charles Parish is now complete.

Designed to maintain and store rail cars, the yard is located at SoLaPort, a port-owned property on the west bank of the Mississippi River.

The yard is configured to accommodate between 250 and 350 rail cars exclusively for Dow Chemical and is accessible via a rail spur designed and installed by Dow on the south side of its facility, according to a news release. Designed by AECOM, the yard's layout complies with Union Pacific Railroad and Dow standards.

The facility was constructed by Barriere Construction and includes a 2,000-square-yard, two-track car storage and maintenance pad and related infrastructure.

The project, which began in January 2020, was funded in part by $8.7 million from Louisiana’s Capital Outlay program.
