The Port of Virginia in Norfolk last month handled 168,430 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up 11.2 percent year over year and a new June record.

Rail containers totaled 30,954, a 9.3 percent increase compared with June 2011. The number of containers moved last month between the Port of Richmond, Va., and Hampton Roads Harbor on the 64 Express barge service skyrocketed 147 percent from May’s level to 803.

"June 2012 is the best June in the history of the port for TEUs, containers and rail," said Virginia Port Authority Executive Director Jerry Bridges in a prepared statement. “I think we are going to continue to gain ground as indicators continue to point to growth for the Port of Virginia.”

In 2012’s first half, the Norfolk port handled 994,727 TEUs, up 5.4 percent compared with the same 2011 period. Rail container volume jumped 12 percent to 179,748.

The Port of Virginia is served by CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Railway, the Eastern Shore Railroad and Norfolk & Portsmouth Belt Line Railroad.
