The Port of Virginia processed nearly 290,000 20-foot equivalent units of cargo last month, a 10% increase from January 2022.

Loaded exports grew by nearly 27,000 TEUs, up 37% compared to the previous year, port officials said in a press release. Imports also increased 5.5% to nearly 7,000 TEUs.

On a fiscal-year basis, which runs between July 1 and June 30, the port's cargo volumes are up 1.6%, with rail volumes up 10%, port officials said.

The port is served by CSX, Norfolk Southern Railway and Norfolk and Portsmouth Belt Line Railroad Co.

Meanwhile, the Port of Jacksonville (Jaxport) announced that personal care products manufacturer USA Big Mountain Paper Inc. is expanding its Jacksonville operations. The company operates a 157,000-square-foot facility near the port and expects to grow the number of supported jobs to 60 from 17 by year's end, Jaxport officials said in a press release.

USA Big Mountain Paper, which began operating its first North American facility at Jacksonville last year, plans to expand Jacksonville production from one business line to five by the end of 2023. The company is a division of Belgian manufacturer Nateen.

Jaxport is served by the Jacksonville Port Terminal Railroad, which offers access to CSX and NS lines.
