Ports of Indiana today issued a request for qualifications to identify railroads interested in providing intra-port switching and track maintenance services in Mount Vernon.

The chosen rail operator would be responsible for providing switching services for about 10,000 carloads annually, as well as overall rail operations and maintenance on 8 miles of track, port officials said in a press release.

Responses to the RFQ are due Aug. 31, after which port officials will issue a formal request for proposals to qualified companies.

Ports of Indiana-Mount Vernon receives as many as 50,000 rail cars each year, provides direct unit-train service for multiple tenants and offers storage for 200 rail cars. The port also has 24-hour service from the Evansville Western Railway, which offers connections to BNSF Railway Co., CSX, Norfolk Southern Railway and Union Pacific Railroad.

The Mount Vernon port features multiple general cargo and bulk docks and a 60-ton dual-lift crane to transload cargo between rail, barges, trucks and warehouses.

"Our port’s rail network is vital to the success of our customers and the future growth of this region, and we are looking for a rail partner that will help grow business for our existing customers and attract new companies to the port," said Port Director Jason May.
