The Ports of Long Beach (POLB), Savannah and Virginia have all reported record cargo volumes for the month of April.

POLB achieved its most active April, continuing a streak of single-month records set in 2022, port officials said in a press release. The port handled 820,718 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) last month, up 10% from April 2021. Imports rose 9.2% to 400,803 TEUs, while exports dropped 1.8% to 121,876 TEUs. Empty containers increased 16.9% to 298,039 TEUs. Overall, POLB has handled more than 3.2 million units so far in 2022, up 5.1% over the same 2021 period.

The Port of Savannah handled 495,782 TEUs last month, a record for April and the Georgia Ports Authority's third-busiest month ever, port officials said in a press release. GPA has handled 4.75 million TEUs so far in fiscal-year 2022, up 8% over 2021. Also, the port's containerized trade increased 6.2% over 2021 to 29,150 TEUs. Garden City Terminal now processes about 10% of loaded containers imported to the United States.

The Port of Virginia processed more than 323,000 TEUs in April, making it the second-most productive month in that port's history for export and import containers, port officials said in a press release. The total missed the all-time monthly volume mark set in December 2021 by just 2,300 TEUs.

Last month's total was nearly 13% ahead of April 2021's level, an increase of 37,000 TEUs. The April volume was also the highest so far in 2022. Rail containers handled at the port increased by 5.6%, or 59,380 units.
