The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) set a record in September for containers as the Port of Charleston handled a boom in imports.
The authority logged 205,008 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) at the Wando Welch, North Charleston and Hugh K. Leatherman terminals in September, besting the previous high-water mark for the month.
The SCPA also set a September record for import volumes at 98,208 TEUs, a 9% year-over-year increase. Exports climbed 2% to 61,705 TEUs.
U.S. consumers continue to spend more on retail goods during the pandemic, spurring record port volumes since March and consistently strong retail imports, SCPA officials said in a press release.
Inland Port Greer handled a record number of containers in September with 13,064 rail moves, while Inland Port Dillon reported 2,133 rail moves.
