The South Carolina Ports Authority last week marked the completion of the first phase of a rail expansion project at Inland Port Greer.

The project entailed construction of an additional rail-processing track and two rail-storage tracks in the terminal, as well as 8,000 feet of new rail to meet projected rising cargo volumes through 2040, SC Ports officials said in a press release.

The second phase, which is scheduled for completion in late 2024, calls for expanding the container yard by 15 acres to the east and west. That project is designed to increase cargo capacity by 50%. The port also will double the size of the existing chassis yard and build new facilities for heavy-lift maintenance and terminal operations.

The $30 million project is funded by SC Ports and part of a $25 million grant issued by the federal Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program.

Norfolk Southern Railway serves the port. During fiscal-year 2022, the port handled more than 150,000 rail lifts.
