The Port of Savannah moved a record 5.6 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2021, a 20% increase from 2020's TEUs, the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) announced this week.

The port recorded 12 consecutive months of record container growth, GPA officials said in a press release. In December 2021, the port registered a record 465,000 TEUs and an all-time high of 312,000 truck gate moves. Including roll-on/roll-off cargo via Ocean Terminal, the port moved a total of 668,166 units, up 11%.

In intermodal rail, the port logged a 10% increase in volume, topping 538,000 container lifts, which is equivalent to 1 million TEUs — another record. Intermodal operations gained the addition of nine working tracks in November 2021, which expanded annual rail lift capacity to 2 million TEUs, a 30% increase. The port now can receive six 10,000-foot-long trains simultaneously at its expanded rail yard.

Also last year, the port added four rail-mounted gantry cranes and 10 rubber-tired gantry cranes.

"Our expanded rail and yard capacity, along with new operational practices, allowed [us] to overcome serious headwinds in the international supply chain," said GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch in a press release. "The team — including our employees, the International Longshoremen’s Association, stevedores, shipping lines, pilots, motor carriers and railroads — came together to handle an unprecedented level of business last year."
