Sea Lead Shipping and T.S. Lines yesterday announced the Jacksonville Port Authority (Jaxport) will serve as the first U.S. port of call for their Asia East Coast (AEC) container service.

The current AEC rotation calls on ports in the northeastern United States and the Mid-Atlantic before moving south to Jacksonville, Florida. Starting next month, the AEC will reverse the rotation, making Jaxport the first U.S. port of call, Jaxport officials said in a press release.

The new port rotation will be Nansha, Ningbo, Shanghai and Qingdao, China; Busan, South Korea; Manzanillo, Mexico; Jacksonville, Florida; Charleston, South Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia; and Newark, New Jersey. The route also offers transshipment connections throughout China, South Korea, Japan, India and other countries in Southeast Asia.

Serving as the first port of call will "significantly" increase Sea Lead's cargo volumes coming into Jaxport and eliminate a week of transit time for Jacksonville importers, Jaxport officials said. The opportunity provides one of the fastest transit times between the Southeast U.S. and Asian ports.

The AEC service calls on the SSA Jacksonville Container Terminal at Blount Island Marine Terminal every two weeks, moving consumer goods such as furniture, clothing and auto parts. It also exports raw materials, including forest products and clay.

Sea Lead is based in Singapore; T.S. Lines is based in Hong Kong. CSX, Norfolk Southern Railway and Florida East Coast Railway serve the port.
