SeaPort Manatee near Tampa Bay, Florida, announced the port's operations set a record in containerized cargo handled in fiscal-year 2022, which ended Sept. 30.

The port logged 1,363,106 tons of containerized cargo, a 34.6% increase over FY21, SeaPort officials said in a press release. The port also recorded an all-time high of 11,030,762 tons, up 5.5% from FY21.

SeaPort Manatee handled a record 177,108 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in FY22, up 30.6% from the previous year and more than double the port’s TEU count in 2020, officials added.

Breakbulk cargo at the port also climbed 39.7% to 807,632 tons.

Petroleum products remain the port’s largest commodity sector with 1,493,883 short tons moved through the port in FY22, up 18.6% year over year (YOY), officials said.

SeaPort Manatee is served by the port's own Port Manatee Railroad, which is operated by Regional Rail LLC. The short line connects to CSX on 7 miles of track.

Meanwhile, the Port of Savannah in Georgia handled more than 1.5 million TEUs in first-quarter FY23 — which ended Sept. 30 — a 9.6% increase YOY.

In rail, the number of lifts of containers to trains grew 6.4% to 146,000 lifts in the quarter at Garden City Terminal, Appalachian Regional Port and the port authority’s pop-up container yards.

However, September container volumes decreased 7.6% compared to September 2021 due in part to Hurricane Ian, which caused the port to shut down operations for three days.

“While we have seen powerful growth across the first quarter, we are beginning to see signs of correction in the market,” Lynch said.

The port is served by CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway.
