Seattle port's container volume exceeded 2 million TEUs for second-straight year

In 2011, the Port of Seattle handled 2.03 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), the second-straight year the port’s container volume exceeded 2 million TEUs. The port set a record 2.1 million TEUs in 2010.
Last year, export volumes continued to increase, empty container positioning remained strong, and new shipping lines, services and trade lanes were added, port officials said in a prepared statement.
“The Port of Seattle will continue to work for its competitive advantages,” said Linda Styrk, the port’s managing director. "We have the capacity and the facilities to handle 10,000 or more TEU container ships, [and] we have excellent intermodal infrastructure and regional distribution facilities.”
The port maintains four container terminals featuring 27 cranes and 11 container berths up to 50 feet deep, is served by BNSF Railway Co. and Union Pacific Railroad, and is located near two major interstates.
