On June 28, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) extolled the opening of CSX Transportation’s new intermodal terminal in North Baltimore, Ohio, during a ceremony held at the facility.

The Northwest Ohio Terminal — which opened for business in February — will accommodate more than 30 trains per day and handle about 2 million containers and trailers per year, according to CSXT.

“This terminal has already brought more than 250 jobs to northwest Ohio, with the potential for additional growth,” said Brown in a prepared statement. “North Baltimore will provide an important gateway for shippers from all across the country to send and sell their goods in the eastern United States, helping to strengthen our nation’s economy.”

The terminal is part of CSX Corp.’s $842 million National Gateway initiative, which calls for establishing a double-stack corridor between Mid-Atlantic ports and Midwestern markets by upgrading three rail corridors running through six states and the District of Columbia, and building and expanding intermodal terminals. In addition to enabling trains to transport double-stacked containers, the gateway improvements will boost capacity and make the route more marketable to major East Coast ports and shippers, according to CSX.
