The South Carolina Ports Authority (SC Ports) yesterday announced it achieved a new monthly container record in November at 250,711 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) and 138,573 pier containers.

November is the ninth consecutive month of a year-over-year record cargo volume at SC Ports, authority officials said in a press release. Unprecedented retail imports continue to flow into the Port of Charleston, they said.

The TEUs recorded at three separate terminals in November represented a 21% year-over-year increase, while pier container volume also rose 21%.

Loaded import TEUs handled last month totaled 127,081 — a 36% year-over-year gain — and loaded export TEUs reached 67,639, up 5%.

The authority’s two rail-served inland ports reported high November numbers as well, hitting 16,629 combined rail moves.

“While the global supply chain remains strained from handling record amounts of cargo, SC Ports brings fluidity to the supply chain,” said SC Ports CEO Jim Newsome. “We invested strategically in port infrastructure to provide much-needed capacity, and we consistently deploy creative, responsive solutions to meet shippers’ needs.”
