Last year, the Port of Tacoma, Wash., set a new container-volume record at 2.07 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a slight increase of about 4,000 TEUs compared with the previous record set in 2005. The port also completed 591,407 intermodal rail lifts, down 7 percent compared with 2005’s record 633,620 lifts.

However, intermodal lifts are projected to bounce back to about 603,000 in 2007 primarily because the port expanded rail capacity in 2006. Served by BNSF Railway Co., Union Pacific Railroad and Tacoma Rail, the port spent $105 million to complete several near-terminal rail expansion projects, including track additions and the reconfiguration of two rail junctions.

Port officials predict container volume will reach a new high-water mark of 2.2 million TEUs in 2007.
