Rail News: Intermodal
The Port of Tacoma, Wash., recently completed rail projects costing $10.5 million that already are paying off in faster throughput at two junctions.
At Bullfrog Junction — an intersection between Tacoma Tideflats, and BNSF Railway Co.’s and Union Pacific Railroad’s mainlines — the port added track and reconfigured the junction. At Chilcote Junction — an intersection where rail traffic from Washington United Terminals, Pierce County Terminal and Tacoma Rail converges — the port also constructed additional track and reconfigured the infrastructure.
Construction began in February, during which both junctions remained operational.
“These two projects increase the efficiency of access to the port rail system and will have a direct impact on the flow of cargo through the port,” said Jeannie Beckett, the port’s senior director of intermodal transportation, in a prepared statement.
