Triple Crown Services Co. plans to spend more than $21 million this year to purchase 800 trailers, double the size of its Fort Wayne, Ind., terminal and maintenance facility, and add 15 jobs.
A Norfolk Southern Corp. subsidiary, the intermodal-service provider expects to spend $20 million to acquire 800 RoadRailer® trailers and 250 bogies. Designed to move freight over the highway and rail, and featuring rail track on wheel assemblies, the RoadRailers will increase Triple Crown's fleet to more than 6,400. Wabash National Corp. plans to begin producing the RoadRailers in April and start delivering units in May.
Triple Crown also expects to spend $800,000 to add 6,000 square feet to the Fort Wayne facility. To begin in March and be completed in summer, the addition includes trailer and bogie maintenance bays, and parts inventory and administrative areas.
Finally, the company plans to expand its service network into Minneapolis within the next two months, placing a terminal — Triple Crown's 12th in the United States — in operation by mid-year. All told, the company's plans are expected to add 15 employees to Triple Crown's staff of 235.
"We look forward to the expansion of our network and providing our Triple Crown service to the Minneapolis area," said Triple Crown President Jim Newton in a prepared statement.
