The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) in February registered 2.3 million tons of freight at its two ports, up 6.9 percent compared with February 2012 volume.

The Port of Savannah's total cargo rose 2.3 percent and volume of 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) also grew by 2.3 percent year over year. The port's TEU count climbed 4.9 percent from January's level.

"We expect to see further growth in container traffic, both in the wake of successful labor contract negotiations and as the nation's economic recovery continues," said GPA Executive Director Curtis Foltz in a press release.

The Port of Brunswick's bulk cargo volume reached 124,028 tons in February, nearly tripling February 2012's mark, GPA officials said. The number of auto/machinery units moved through Colonel's Island Terminal at the port jumped 30.4 percent to 50,622 units.

"Increased roll-on/roll-off cargo among the 21 car manufacturers we serve indicates an improving market for auto sales," said Foltz.
