UP lets contract for automated gate system at Utah terminal

Union Pacific Railroad recently awarded a contract to Science Applications International Corp.’s (SAIC) security and transportation technology unit to supply and install an automated gate system at the Class I’s Salt Lake City intermodal terminal.

Featuring optical character recognition (OCR) and biometric technology, the system is designed to automatically identify and process containers, trucks, chassis and drivers at entry and exit gates. As trucks enter a gate, OCR portals identify equipment numbers and capture container images for online damage inspection reports while an ultrasonic fingerprint scanning system identifies drivers.

UP plans to use the data generated by the system for traffic routing, security, record-keeping and other functions. SAIC previously installed a similar gate system at UP’s Dallas intermodal terminal.
