Perhaps U.S. railroads’ traffic fortunes are beginning to turn. During the week ending March 10, the roads reached their highest weekly traffic level so far in 2007, according to the Association of American Railroads.
Originated carloads totaled 330,790 units and intermodal loads totaled 243,174 units. Although intermodal traffic increased 8.9 percent year over year, carloads still trailed 2006’s pace by 0.9 percent.
During 2007’s first 10 weeks, U.S. railroads originated 3.2 million carloads, down 5.1 percent, and 2.3 million trailers and containers, up 1.7 percent compared with traffic from 2006’s first 10 weeks. Total estimated volume of 319.7 billion ton-miles dropped 3.8 percent.
Canadian railroads posted stronger weekly traffic figures, too. During the week ending March 10, their originated carloads totaled 81,585 units, up 0.1 percent, and intermodal loads totaled 45,600 units, up 2 percent compared with similar 2006 data. Through 10 weeks, Canadian roads’ carloads decreased 4.3 percent to 738,464 units and intermodal loads declined 0.2 percent to 426,256 units compared with last year.
On a combined cumulative-volume basis through 10 weeks, reporting U.S. and Canadian railroads moved 3.9 million carloads, down 4.9 percent, and 2.7 million trailers and containers, up 1.4 percent compared with traffic from 2006’s first 10 weeks.
In Mexico, Kansas City Southern de México R.L. de C.V.’s total weekly carloads decreased 11.2 percent to 10,559 units and total intermodal volume declined 1.9 percent to 4,153 units compared with traffic from 2006’s 10th week. Through 10 weeks, the railroad’s cumulative carload volume dropped 7.6 percent to 103,582 units, but total intermodal loads increased 7.6 percent to 40,976 units compared with last year.
