The Port of Virginia last month handled 180,384 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up 8 percent year over year and a new July volume record.
Rail containers totaled 32,941, a 22.5 percent increase compared with July 2011. The Virginia Inland Port registered a 17.6 percent increase in the number of containers it handled (2,328) and the Norfolk port posted a 10.9 percent rise in the number of ship calls at 173. "This past July was the best July ever on record for us, just as this past June and May were the best of those months, historically speaking," said Virginia Port Authority Executive Director Jerry Bridges in a prepared statement. “We saw increase in rail moves, barge moves, ship calls and containers handled at the Virginia Inland Port.
Through 2012’s first seven months, the port handled 1,110,983 TEUs, up 5.8 percent compared with the same 2011 period. Rail container volume jumped 13.8 percent to 212,689 and the number of ship calls climbed 8.3 percent to 1,138.
The port is served by CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Railway, the Eastern Shore Railroad and Norfolk & Portsmouth Belt Line Railroad.
