The Port of Virginia announced yesterday it will purchase 36 new automated stacking cranes from Konecranes.
The cranes will cost about $150 million. They will be "the centerpieces of a modernized Norfolk International Terminals’ North Berth” and replace an existing straddle carrier operation, port officials said in a press release. The purchase is part of a construction project to expand and modernize the terminal and create the capacity to process 1.4 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per year.
The cranes will be delivered in two phases, with 18 cranes per construction phase. The first group is expected to arrive in mid-2025 and the second in mid-2027. Construction on the berth will begin in summer.
Once construction is completed, the north and south berths of the terminal combined will feature the capacity to process 3.6 million TEUs annually, port officials said.
The port also is building a container stack yard configured around the automated stacking cranes.
CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway serve the port.
