Washington state port awards rail project contract to RailWorks

The Port of Kalama, Wash., has awarded a contract to RailWorks Corp. to complete a rail expansion and relocation project at a TEMCO L.L.C. facility.

To begin in January and be completed by June 2014, the more than $10 million project involves the construction of lead and yard tracks — including 3.6 miles of new track — and the relocation of 1.1 miles of track. RailWorks also will complete associated grading and drainage improvements, and utility relocations and protections.

The project will double rail capacity and triple product throughput capacity at TEMCO's export grain facility at the port, which is served by BNSF Railway Co. and Union Pacific Railroad. TEMCO plans to expand the facility.

The project will enable the company to process two unit trains simultaneously; TEMCO currently can only process one unit train over the existing dump pit.

"Rail expansion and track relocation significantly enhance our client's transportation efficiency and doubles the firm's rail capacity to move grain, which enables them to remain competitive in the global export market," said Troy Stariha, the port commission's president, in a press release.
