On Aug. 24, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognized Kansas City Southern Railway Co. (KCSR) and the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) for implementing a project in Kansas City designed to reduce diesel emissions.

KCSR received a $43,084 Diesel Emission Reduction Act grant issued by the EPA to the state DNR and administered by MARC that covered 75 percent of the cost to purchase and install automatic engine shutdown/startup devices on five locomotives. The railroad funded the remaining 25 percent. The devices control locomotive idling, helping to reduce diesel emissions and conserve fuel.

“This project has resulted in a CO2 emissions reduction of 275 tons and as much as 550 tons per year; a NOx emissions reduction of 7.3 tons and as much as 14 tons per year; and a total fuel savings per year of 25,000 gallons,” said Kansas City Southern Executive Chairman Mike Haverty in an item posted on the “KCS News” web page. “The data collected so far indicates that emission reductions are significantly greater than originally anticipated.”
