Kansas City Southern’s board recently approved a $150 million 2007 capital spending budget for the railroad’s international engineering department.

The Class I plans to spend $113 million on track maintenance, such as installing 70 miles of rail and replacing 600,000 ties. The remaining $37 million is budgeted for capacity projects, including $10 million for Shreveport Yard improvements, and $17 million for siding improvements on the Kansas City Southern Railway Co. (KCSR) and Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V. (KCSM).

The department also plans to continue upgrading the Meridian Speedway. Crews will install 40 miles of rail and 185,000 ties, and complete capacity projects at four locations this year.

Meanwhile, KCS plans to launch a new Web site next month. Accessible at www.kcsouthern.com, the site will provide information and business tools for both subsidiary railroads. Currently, KCS maintains separate Web sites for KCSR at www.kcsi.com, and for KCSM at www.tfm.com.mx.

“U.S. customers are conducting business via ‘Online Transactions’ on www.kcsi.com and Mexican customers are conducting business via ‘eTFM’ on www.tfm.com.mx,” said KCS officials in a prepared statement.

Anyone who tries to access www.kcsi.com or www.tfm.com.mx will automatically be directed to www.kcsouthern.com, KCS said.
