Last month, Kansas City Southern moved the first of three unit trains of over-sized wind towers originating in Denver and terminating in Los Altos, Jalisco, Mexico. The move, which concluded on Nov. 18, required close coordination between all parties, including Kansas City Southern Railway Co. and Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V. (KCSM).

"This project was a challenge. The wind towers and other components are extremely large and heavy," said KCSM executive Yolanda Treviño in an item posted on the "KCS News" web page. "There is also a wide variety of components with different shapes and sizes that required a great deal of work to find the appropriate loading scheme and to approve all clearance issues."

In the past, wind towers and components typically were moved only by truck, he said. The Class I's cross-functional and cross-border team proved KCS "can be the best transportation solution" by ensuring collaboration in all levels of the company, said Treviño.
