Mexican rail industry is working with government to address proposed railroad law amendments, KCS says

Kansas City Southern Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing Pat Ottensmeyer, and Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V. (KCSM) President and Executive Representative Jose Zozaya, VP of Marketing and Business Solutions Carlos Velez, and VP of Sales and Marketing David Eaton recently were part of a U.S. Department of Commerce-led business development mission to Mexico.

Representatives from about 17 companies were involved in the delegation, which traveled to both Mexico City and Monterrey.
 
During the trip, legislation that proposes to amend some provisions of the Mexican Regulatory Railroad Services Law was approved by the Mexican House of Deputies and sent to the Mexican Senate for consideration.

Because the final bill from the Mexican House still is subject to discussion and change in the Mexican Senate, and any such legislation passed by the House and Senate must be signed into law by Mexico's president, "it is too early to determine what, if any, impact these changes could have on the Mexican railroad industry and its customers," KCS and KCSM officials said in an item posted on the "KCS News" web page.
 
Mexican rail industry and trade association officials are working with Mexican legislators and executive branch members to address the proposed amendments, they said.

"The Mexican rail industry believes that the current law has worked very well for Mexico, the rail concessionaires and shippers, and that it has contributed very significantly to growth in the Mexican economy, especially [the] manufacturing and industrial sectors," KCS and KCSM officials said.
 
Officials in the Mexican government and Mexican Senate understand that stance, and will work to change the legislation passed by the House, they said.
