Last month, Kansas City Southern Railway Co. (KCSR) broke ground for a new intermodal facility in Wylie, Texas.

To be completed in mid-2015, the facility will feature two 5,000-foot intermodal tracks, more than 1,500 parking spaces, mechanical tracks and a state-of-the-art Automated Gate System (AGS), KCSR officials said in an item posted on the "KCS News" web page.

AGS uses optical character recognition technology, biometric driver identification and high-definition video imagery to improve safety, security and efficiency at an entry gate. The system also stores photo images to assist with damage prevention.

Construction crews are excavating more than 1 million cubic yards of dirt that need to be moved during the project, KCSR officials said.

Meanwhile, KCSR also has appointed Jack Elmore assistant vice president of claims. He will be based in Kansas City, Mo., and report to Associate General Counsel of Claims and Litigation Management Leonard Wagner.

Elmore, who has 35 years of railroad claims experience, will be responsible for oversight and supervision of KCSR’s claims office in Shreveport, La., as well as a number of administrative duties for the department.

He joins KCSR after serving as director of risk management for CSX Transportation the past 15 years. Elmore previously held various claims positions with increasing responsibility at Conrail.
