Kansas City Southern officials on Oct. 31 will hold ceremonies to mark the start of construction on the second span of the new International Bridge in Laredo, Texas, and Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

The U.S. ceremony will take place south of Zaragoza Street in Laredo on the east side of the train tracks. The new bridge will be built alongside the existing bridge. After it's completed in 2025, the new structure will help expedite trains through the corridor to relieve traffic congestion in Laredo and Nuevo Laredo, KCS officials said in a press release.

The U.S. presidential permit for construction of the new single-track span bridge was received in July 2020. The structure will enhance border security and improve the movement of rail traffic through the Laredo/Nuevo Laredo rail corridor, KCS officials said. The existing single-track bridge is the only rail bridge crossing the Rio Grande River to link Laredo and Nuevo Laredo.

The engineering and design phase has been underway since 2020. With construction permits in the United States and Mexico now obtained, the project can move to the construction phase, KCS officials said.
