Kansas City Southern recently acquired the Puerta Mexico intermodal facility in Toluca, Mexico, and plans to launch a direct service to the terminal later this month. Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V. (KCSM) will provide the intermodal service from Lázaro Cárdenas to Puerta Mexico to offer Mexico City importers and exporters a transportation alternative featuring improved reliability and better transit times, according to KCS.

Puerta Mexico — which serves Mexico’s industrial centers, several ports and the Toluca-Mexico City industrial corridor — provides intermodal, truck, bonded warehousing and on-site customs services. The terminal features Mexico’s only inland customs-clearing facility, and handles more than 150,000 containers and more than 2 million tons of cargo annually, according to KCS.

With direct access to KCSM’s “N” line, Puerta Mexico will become the “terminal of choice” for cargo moving to and from the central valley, Port of Lázaro Cárdenas and border crossings in Nuevo Laredo/Laredo, KCS officials said in a prepared statement.

“Puerta Mexico is well-positioned on KCS' International Intermodal Corridor, making it a valuable enhancement for our cross-border service offering,” said KCS President and Chief Operating Officer David Starling.
