Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V. (KCSM) recently recognized 15 Mexican companies for using freight rail to avoid emitting 539,337 tons of greenhouse gases in one year.
The railroad presented awards to ADM, ArcelorMittal, Bartlett Grain Co., Cargill, CEMEX, Chrysler, Dow Química, ExxonMobil, General Motors, Grupo Modelo, Maersk Line, Pacer Stacktrain, Pemex Refinación, Ternium and Vitro.
"The total emissions avoided by this group of customers are equivalent to removing 96,000 cars from the streets of Mexico City for one year," said KCSM President and Executive Representative Jose Zozaya in an item posted on the "KCS News" web page. "It would take approximately 12 million trees over 10 years to absorb the 539,337 tons of CO2 these companies saved the environment in one year."
Kansas City Southern offers U.S. and Mexican shippers an online carbon calculator that estimates a shipment's carbon reduction as part of a price quote.
