Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V. (KCSM) earlier this month recognized 13 customers for their carbon-reduction efforts.

The railroad presented awards to ADM, ArcelorMittal, APL Logistics Mexico, Bartlett Grain Co., CEMEX, Chrysler, ExxonMobil, General Motors, JB Hunt Transport Inc., Lansing Trade Group, Pemex Refining, Schneider National Inc. and Ternium Mexico.

By using rail, the companies prevented the emission of 429,381 tons of greenhouse gases annually, Kansas City Southern officials said in an item posted on the "KCS News" web page.

"The total emissions avoided by this group of customers are equivalent to removing more than 76,000 cars from the streets of Mexico for one year," said Pat Ottensmeyer, KCS' executive vice president of sales and marketing. "It would take approximately 10 million trees over 10 years to absorb the CO2 these companies saved the environment in one year."

The KCSM awards are part of KCS' carbon marketing strategy, which aims to promote initiatives designed to protect the environment and help customers meet their carbon-reduction targets.
