KCSM seeks to serve more Mexican industrial parks

Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V. (KCSM) is trying to serve more Mexican industrial parks, especially since a near-shoring trend is gathering steam and many global manufacturers are seeking to establish operations in Mexico.

A new business development team is mapping all existing industrial parks that currently have access to rail service or are adjacent to KCSM's mainline. Team members also are identifying industrial parks that are in the development or site selection stage and could incorporate rail access.

"To increase the odds that global manufacturers locate on land served by KCS, we are working closely with the Mexican Association of Industrial Parks," said KCSM official David Eaton in a item posted on the "KCS News" web page. "KCS is teaching park owners the benefits of rail and helping with conceptual engineering, service design and exploratory rates."

Before year's end, the new business development team also plans to meet with Mexico's five leading industrial real estate brokers, who are early participants in the site selection process.

"We need the brokers to understand the value of promoting land served by KCS," said Eaton. "Brokers can direct business to the franchise and away from the competition."

In February 2013, the railroad also expects to provide its sales force a catalog of KCSM-served industrial parks that are adjacent to the mainline or under development.
