Better service, better alternatives. Those are the main reasons the Kansas City Southern Railway Co. and sister railroad Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V. are launching a daily intermodal service between Lazaro Cardenas, San Luis Potosi and Monterrey, Mexico, and the southeastern United States.

Beginning the week of June 19, trains will move from the Port of Lazaro Cardenas through major distribution markets in Mexico City, San Luis Potosi and Monterrey, and travel to the U.S. Southeast via Laredo, Texas, and Jackson, Miss. In addition to the six-day service, the railroads will offer connecting service to Atlanta, which will add a day to transit time. Parent Kansas City Southern (KCS) plans to expand service to Houston and Kansas City, Mo.

The service targets containerized consumer and manufactured goods originating at the Port of Lazaro Cardenas, and trailers originating from Schneider National Inc. and its customers out of San Luis Potosi and Monterrey.

“The service is just in time to assist customers with the peak season, and is a clear indicator of the growth of traffic and capacity planned for the port,” said Gonzalo Ortiz, general manager of Hutchison Port Holdings Ltd. — which plans to expand its container terminal in Lazaro Cardenas — in a prepared statement.

The service is part of KCS’ plans to develop an international intermodal corridor connecting Lazaro Cardenas to the southeast and central United States, and build an intermodal terminal at the Lazaro Cardenas port.
