Metro-North settles contract with 10 unions, reaches tentative agreements with six bargaining units

After almost five years of negotiations, 10 of MTA Metro-North Railroad’s 17 unions representing 2,600 employees have ratified new collective agreements. In addition, six bargaining units comprising the Association of Commuter Rail Employees, which represents about 1,400 Metro-North workers, have reached a tentative agreement, which is awaiting ratification.

Unions that ratified the contract — which will be retroactive to Jan. 1, 2003, and expire on June 15, 2010 — include the Transportation-Communications Union, International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, National Conference of Firemen and Oilers, and Transport Workers of America.

Subject to final approval by MTA’s board, the contracts include a $1,000 signing bonus, compounded raises of 20 percent over a seven-and-a-half-year period, and require no health and welfare contributions from employees.

Metro-North still has not reached labor agreements with the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association, which represents about 160 employees, or the International Brotherhood of Teamsters’ Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division (BMWED), which represents about 560 workers. Metro-North and the Sheet Metal Workers’ union will meet next week; earlier this month, President Bush established a second Presidential Emergency Board to investigate the dispute between Metro-North and the BMWED.
