Canadian Pacific Railway and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) reached a "no strike/no lockout" agreement over the weekend after union members narrowly rejected a tentative five-year agreement.

CPR and TCRC officials plan to meet this week to determine the next steps and explore ways to reach a mutually acceptable agreement.

In September, the Class I and union — which represents 4,500 CPR locomotive engineers and conductors — reached a tentative five-year pact calling for wage increases, benefit improvements and the introduction of work/life balance measures.

Meanwhile, the Canadian Industrial Relations Board earlier this month certified TCRC as the bargaining agent for the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission's (ONTC) locomotive engineers, firemen/helpers, hostlers, brakemen, baggage handlers and yard workers.

The commission's employees recently voted in favor of being represented by the TCRC, which soon will initiate bargaining with ONTC officials.
