Yesterday, Canadian National Railway Co. negotiated three tentative agreements with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW), averting a potential strike.

Covering about 4,000 shopcraft, clerical and intermodal workers, and owner-operators, the four-year pacts would be retroactive to Jan. 1. Contract details weren’t released pending ratification by CAW members.

On Jan. 10, a majority of union members voted in favor of issuing a strike against CN — tentatively beginning Jan. 18 — if railroad and CAW officials failed to negotiate new contracts.

“I’m extremely pleased that CN and the CAW negotiated these new agreements without labor disruption,” said CN President and Chief Executive Officer E. Hunter Harrison in a prepared statement.
