After shrinking a smidge in February, the U.S. Class I workforce grew a bit bigger last month. As of mid-March, the large roads employed 160,523 people, a 0.8 percent increase compared with February’s level and 3 percent gain versus March 2011, according to Surface Transportation Board (STB) data.
All six segments increased on a month-over-month basis: maintenance-of-way and structures, 2.5 percent to 36,135; maintenance of equipment and stores, 0.5 percent to 29,736; executive, officials and staff assistants, 0.5 percent to 9,551; transportation (train and engine), 0.3 percent to 64,612; transportation (other than T&E), 0.3 percent to 6,723; and professional and administrative, 0.2 percent to 13,766.
All categories posted gains versus 2011 levels, too: executive, officials and staff assistants, up 4 percent; maintenance of equipment and stores, up 3.3 percent; maintenance-of-way and structures, also up 3.3 percent; transportation (T&E), up 3.2 percent; transportation (other than T&E), up 1.7 percent; and professional and administrative, up 0.9 percent.
