CN, UTU reach tentative agreement covering Illinois Central yardmasters

United Transportation Union (UTU)-represented yardmasters at CN’s Illinois Central property recently reached a new tentative agreement with the Class I following assistance from the National Mediation Board. A previous tentative agreement was rejected by the workers in March.

The yardmasters will vote on the new tentative pact through Sept. 15, according to the UTU.

“This tentative agreement, as with others negotiated with Class I railroads, is intended to bring parity in wages, benefits and work rules to the thousands of employees in the railroad industry,” said UTU General Chairperson Doyle Turner in a news item posted on the union’s website.

In 1998, CN gained control of the Illinois Central, which runs from Chicago to New Orleans and Mobile, Ala., and also reaches Omaha, Neb., and Sioux City, Iowa. The Illinois Central is part of CN’s Southern Region.
