Washingtonian magazine recently named the Surface Transportation Board (STB) one of the "50 Great Places to Work" in 2013.The board is one of only four federal agencies to make the list, STB officials said in a press release. Federal agencies were chosen based on a combination of Partnership for Public Service rankings and hiring potential. For four years in a row, the partnership has ranked the STB No. 1 among small federal agencies. The magazine ranked the STB — which has 138 employees — among the top agencies with more than 100 but fewer than 1,000 full-time permanent workers. The board was ranked No. 1 according to an overall index score that measures the performance of agencies related to employee satisfaction and commitment. The STB's workplace policies foster a work-life balance through flexible work schedules, board members said. The STB also stresses an open-door management environment that encourages innovation, and a work environment that helps retain skilled workers and recruit top-tier job candidates, they said."Our employees can be proud of the contributions they all make to implement the board's critical role in our nation's transportation network," said STB Chairman Daniel Elliott III.
